What Are Dental Implants?

Commonly made of titanium, dental implants mimic the look of a screw but function like a regular tooth root. Delivering continuous stimulation to the jawbone each time you bite down or chew, these replacement teeth support customized restorations that include dental crowns, dental bridges, and even dentures. Because they fuse with the jawbone and its surrounding tissues through a process known as osseointegration, they deliver optimal stability so that you can eat the foods you love, smile with confidence, and speak clearly for 30 years or longer.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

Each patient who receives dental implants will have a different treatment plan; however, each will follow the same process to achieve a fully restored smile. The following four steps are required:

  • Initial Consultation – You will meet with a member of our qualified team to determine the status of your oral and overall health. We’ll also examine your jawbone to find out if you need preparatory treatments before undergoing dental implant surgery.
  • Dental Implant Surgery – Once cleared for the procedure, you will arrive and receive local anesthesia to help numb the various areas of your mouth. We’ll then place each dental implant post into its corresponding location, ensuring it is positioned properly for maximum support.
  • Osseointegration/Metal Abutments – After the gum tissue is closed and healing caps are placed over your surgical sites, you will recover at home. Osseointegration, which is the process of the implants fusing with the bone tissues, requires 4-6 months. Once you are healed, you will have metal abutments placed on top of your implant posts so that your restoration will properly attach.
  • Delivery of Final Restoration – Before the completion of treatment, you will receive your finalized restoration. This may be a crown, bridge, or denture depending on how many teeth you must have replaced.

Benefits of Dental Implants

You will find that choosing dental implants to replace your missing teeth allows you many unique benefits. Once you review the ones listed below, you’ll realize that there is no better solution for tooth loss than these permanent and highly durable prosthetics:

  • Dental implants are designed to last 30 years or more.
  • Dental implants function like regular teeth, so you can eat, speak, and clean your smile without much issue.
  • Dental implants look like natural teeth because of the materials used, so others will never know the difference between your real and artificial teeth.
  • Dental implants offer continuous stimulation to your jaw so that your facial features will not sag or droop.
  • Dental implants allow you to eat your favorite foods, so there are virtually no restrictions when it comes to eating.

Who Dental Implants Can Help

You may worry that you will not be eligible for dental implants, but you’ll be pleased to know that most patients who are experiencing tooth loss are considered viable candidates. While there are situations that can make healing and recovery more difficult, our team can work with you and your physician to establish a plan that will lead to ultimate success.

Missing One Tooth

Even when you’re missing a single tooth, we can use one titanium post, one metal abutment, and a single customized dental crown to replace it. By using the vacant socket, we can avoid altering healthy teeth, which is common with dental bridges.

Missing Multiple Teeth

Using two dental implants and a customized bridge, we can place the posts into the exterior sockets, allowing them to fuse with the jawbone. Once fully healed, we’ll attach a bridge on top so that it fills in the gaps, leaves healthy teeth untouched, and creates a full, complete smile.

Missing All of Your Teeth

While dentures are effective at restoring the look of your smile, implant dentures do more than address the visible portions of smiles. They rebuild teeth from the roots up so that optimal stimulation occurs, minimizing the risk of facial collapse and bone resorption. Using between 4 and 6 implant posts, we will put them in place along the arch before attaching custom dentures on top.

Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants

There is no set price for dental implants because of the customization that is provided. These prosthetics are one-of-a-kind for each person, so no treatment plan is the same. Once you meet with a member of our Waterford Dental Group team, we will evaluate your jawbone and oral and overall health to create a plan that works for you. We’ll then discuss the factors that make up the cost of your treatment and go over the financial requirements, helping to maximize your dental benefits as well as offer alternative solutions to help with the payment process.
