Although this may seem like a strange request, it is done to help the prosthetics mold to your mouth as well as to get you used to wearing them. But beyond the first day, it’s important that you start removing them before you go to bed. Although it may be easier to just leave them in place overnight so you can save time in the morning, here are five reasons why this is a very dangerous idea.

Excess Bacteria Growth

When you leave your dentures in your mouth overnight, they will accumulate oral bacteria that could lead to infection, bad breath, and even gum disease. Thus, be sure to take them out, clean them, and soak them while you rest so they’ll be clean and fresh and bacteria-free when you wake up!

Denture-Induced Stomatitis

Stomatitis is a yeast infection that can develop when you don’t remove your dentures often enough. It is more common on the gums of the top arch and usually develops underneath the denture. You may notice painful red bumps or general redness in the gum tissue that makes wearing the denture uncomfortable. To avoid this, be sure to remove the denture to clean it after each meal, and overnight while you sleep.

Accelerated Bone Deterioration

When you lose permanent teeth, your jaw no longer receives stimulation from your tooth roots, which can cause the jawbone to deteriorate. When you get dentures, you can slow this deterioration, but unfortunately there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. That’s because the constant pressure created by wearing your denture 24/7 can actually accelerate bone loss instead of preventing it. This could eventually lead to the need for a bone graft, or create a sunken, hollowed-out look in your face that ages you well beyond your years.

Unnecessary Wear & Tear

Your new dentures were designed to last for five to seven years with proper care and use, but part of that maintenance includes removing and soaking them every night. If you fail to do so, you could take years off their lifespan, especially if you grind your teeth or clench your jaw when you sleep (bruxism). You can also dry out the denture and cause expensive or irreparable damage!

Dirty Dentures

Finally, even though they won’t get cavities like real teeth, it’s still very important that you keep your dentures clean to prevent bacteria, odors, and stains from destroying them and making you sick. Unfortunately, if you’re not taking them out regularly, chances are that they’re not as clean as they should be. Thus, be sure to remove them at night, clean them well, and give your mouth a breather for a few hours while you sleep.

Remember, beyond the first 24 hours, your dentures should never remain in your mouth around the clock. To ensure that your mouth stays healthy and your prosthetic lasts as long as possible, take them out every night before bed, clean them, and soak them in either water or denture soak so they retain their shape and don’t become permanently warped or damaged from drying out.

About Our Practice

At Waterford Dental Group, we are proud to offer a variety of tooth replacement options, including durable, lifelike dentures.
