Considered the gold standard of tooth replacement, dental implants cannot be matched by any other form of restorative care. While dental bridges and dentures offer beneficial results that allow for improved appearance and clearer speech, they lack the longevity, durability, and ease that dental implants provide. Our team of dental experts at Waterford Dental Group is here to show you a new way to replace missing teeth by using safe and effective dental implants in Dublin to restore and rebuild your smile. What Are Dental Implants?

Commonly made of titanium, dental implants mimic the look of a screw but function like a regular tooth root. Delivering continuous stimulation to the jawbone each time you bite down or chew, these replacement teeth support customized restorations that include dental crowns, dental bridges, and even dentures. Because they fuse with the jawbone and its surrounding tissues through a process known as osseointegration, they deliver optimal stability so that you can eat the foods you love, smile with confidence, and speak clearly for 30 years or longer.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

As one of the most successful and comprehensive ways to replace missing teeth, dental implants involve a multi-step process to ensure they last decades to a lifetime. During your consultation, our team will walk you through the entire treatment plan so that you know what to expect from start to finish. We also have a periodontist on staff, meaning that you won’t have to travel to a different location to undergo the procedure. Until then, here’s a brief look at the dental implant process.

Initial Dental Implant Consultation

You will meet with one of our dentists to discuss your oral and overall health. Based on our findings, we will determine if you need preliminary treatments before undergoing dental implant surgery. This is to ensure that your mouth is healthy enough to undergo the process. Any underlying problems like gum disease or decay can increase the risk of failure down the road. Once your oral health is prepared for the procedure, we can move forward with the treatment plan.

Dental Implant Surgery

For your surgery, we will administer local anesthesia to keep you comfortable and free of any pain. We can even offer you sedation dentistry to further reduce your body’s ability to register pain while also making you much more relaxed during your appointment. We’ll then use special instruments to make small incisions in your gums to place each dental implant before closing the tissue. We will also place a dental cap atop the metal post to protect it while you recover. Since you’ll be receiving local anesthesia, you’ll have someone you know take you to and from your appointment.

Once the procedure is finished, you’ll return home to heal. It should typically take three to six months for osseointegration—the fusing of the bone and implant—to complete before you can return to have your metal abutments put into place. During your recovery, you’ll need to implement preventive measures to keep the implant safe while it fuses with the jawbone. This is what will provide the stability needed to hold your restoration(s) in place indefinitely.

Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s)

The last step is receiving your customized dental crown, bridge, or denture. Depending on how many teeth you have replaced, we will secure the appropriate restoration to complete your refreshed, fully functional smile. After placing your restoration, our team will verify that your results are correct and to your satisfaction before sending you on your way.

Benefits of Dental Implants

More than half a million dental implants are placed annually, so they are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to restore smiles after tooth loss. Because of the specialized process by which they are placed in the jawbone, these advanced prosthodontic devices can deliver a range of impressive benefits that traditional dentures and dental bridges cannot match. Here’s a quick overview of only a few of the astounding ways in which dental implants from Waterford Dental Group can improve your health and quality of life.

Day-to-Day Benefits

Dental implants from our Dublin office offer a number of benefits you may notice in your daily life. These include:

  • Allowing you to chew anything you could with real teeth so you can enjoy a diverse diet of tasty foods with interesting textures.
  • Requiring the same oral hygiene methods as real teeth, which means you won’t have to worry about elaborate nightly cleaning rituals like you would with traditional bridges or dentures.
  • Giving you the confidence you need to smile proudly at friends, family, coworkers, and strangers.
  • Securely holding their places in your mouth so you won’t have to worry about them sliding about on your gums, which can make speech and chewing difficult.

Health Benefits

Dental implants can also make it easier to maintain a healthy lifestyle in ways like:

  • Restoring maximum chewing power so the patient can enjoy superior nutrition that supports excellent overall health. Dental implants have no problem handling tougher fare such as juicy steaks, snappy raw fruits and veggies, and crunchy nuts and seeds.
  • Stimulating the jawbone during the chewing process to keep it healthy and strong. This exercise can prevent or even reverse the process of bone erosion that results from tooth loss and keep the jaw and face from developing a withered and sunken appearance. Traditional restorations, on the other hand, do not provide this exercise to the jaw.
  • Being surgically anchored in the jawbone to prevent your restoration from shifting around on your gums, which can cause uncomfortable sores.
  • Since they are simple to clean, dental implants make it easier to avoid painful and destructive oral infections.

Long-Term Benefits

Dental implants may even benefit your pocketbook, career, and social life in ways like:

  • Boasting a 95% success rate even ten years after being placed, which makes them a sound investment in your appearance, confidence, and oral and overall health.
  • Possibly lasting for a lifetime if they receive excellent care, which can save you vast sums of money that would otherwise be spent on periodic replacements for traditional restorations like bridges and dentures.
  • Making it easy to smile proudly at work and in social situations, which can help you build rapport, win trust, close sales, and meet new friends. Implants may even make it easier to distinguish yourself from the competition during job interviews or when being considered for a promotion.

Who Dental Implants Can Help

You may worry that you will not be eligible for dental implants, but you’ll be pleased to know that most patients who are experiencing tooth loss are considered viable candidates. While there are situations that can make healing and recovery more difficult, our team can work with you and your physician to establish a plan that will lead to ultimate success.

Missing One Tooth

Even when you’re missing a single tooth, we can use one titanium post, one metal abutment, and a single customized dental crown to replace it. By using the vacant socket, we can avoid altering healthy teeth, which is common with dental bridges.

Missing Multiple Teeth

Using two dental implants and a customized bridge, we can place the posts into the exterior sockets, allowing them to fuse with the jawbone. Once fully healed, we’ll attach a bridge on top so that it fills in the gaps, leaves healthy teeth untouched, and creates a full, complete smile.

Missing All of Your Teeth

While dentures are effective at restoring the look of your smile, implant dentures do more than address the visible portions of smiles. They rebuild teeth from the roots up so that optimal stimulation occurs, minimizing the risk of facial collapse and bone resorption. Using between 4 and 6 implant posts, we will put them in place along the arch before attaching custom dentures on top.

Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants

There is no set price for dental implants because of the customization that is provided. These prosthetics are one-of-a-kind for each person, so no treatment plan is the same. Once you meet with a member of our Waterford Dental Group team, we will evaluate your jawbone and oral and overall health to create a plan that works for you. We’ll then discuss the factors that make up the cost of your treatment and go over the financial requirements, helping to maximize your dental benefits as well as offer alternative solutions to help with the payment process.
