If you have been wearing dentures for many years, you may wonder when it might be time to trade your existing teeth for new ones. As custom prosthetics that help rebuild smiles, it’s no secret that they’re not meant to last forever, but which signs indicate a need for a replacement? Keep reading to discover four ways you can tell when you need to talk to your dentist about receiving new dentures.

They No Longer Fit As Comfortably As They Should

There is a natural regression that occurs while wearing dentures – bone resorption. When teeth are missing or require extraction, the bone no longer receives the stimulation it needs to remain strong and healthy.

Since dentures only replace the visible portions of teeth, the pressure placed on your jawbone can cause it to weaken and shift slightly faster over time. As a result, your dentures may no longer fit the same way after a few years, and you’ll need to see your dentist for a reline or replacement.

The Teeth or Base of Your Dentures Are Broken

Damaged dentures need to be examined by your dentist sooner rather than later. Whether you accidentally broke one or more of your artificial teeth or the base, there is a good chance you may require a replacement.

Some cases of minor chipped teeth can be remedied with dental bonding; however, more serious damage may only be corrected with a new set of teeth.

You Notice Changes in the Way You Talk

Although it is normal to experience a change in your speech patterns immediately following the placement of new dentures, this adjustment phase will only last temporarily. However, if you begin to notice over time that you talk with a lisp or slur your speech, it may be that your dentures no longer fit correctly. This could mean you need a reline or replacement to ensure they fit properly and allow you to speak normally.

You Notice Oral Sores Forming Inside Your Mouth

Unless it is nighttime and you are in bed, you are encouraged to wear your dentures all of the time. However, if you notice sores forming along your gums, it could be that your artificial teeth are to blame. The pressure placed on your soft oral tissues can cause discomfort and irritation, especially if you discover an uneven distribution of bite force while wearing your dentures.

You will need to meet with your dentist to discuss the problem areas and determine if a reline is required.

Dentures can be a beneficial addition to your life, allowing you to eat the foods you love and speak with greater clarity when around others. Making sure you know when it’s time to seek a replacement or reline will ensure your smile remains healthy, pain-free, and comfortable day after day.
